Todd Simpson is a young, exciting guitarist and singer from the
Birmingham, Alabama area. Todd Simpson and the Mojo Child band play a mixture of
Blues Standards, Rock Classics, modern tunes, and Original music. Despite his
young age, Todd has performed on stages across the country and has a world wide
following.
Todd spent most of his early years in and out of hospitals. Todd
was born with a very rare condition called DiGeorge Syndrome, which required his
first open-heart surgery at two days old. He struggled through those early years
with many associated problems, including Combined Immune Deficiency, severe
Dyslexia and Disautonomia. By this third birthday, Todd had already spent over
700 days in the hospital. During Todd's early years, he had a Home Healthcare
Nurse who sat by his bed and listened to Blues music for hours each day.
At age 8, Todd picked up a harmonica. He instantly began wailing
away on the harp and singing the Blues. Two days later, he went to see Willie
King at City Stages. He met Willie before the show and was invited to play a 50
minute set with the legendary Bluesman. Since then, Todd has played City Stages
with Little Whit and Big Bo and James Peterson. He played any venue he was
invited to play, as well as many street gigs in New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville
and Birmingham. Todd has been fortunate to meet many Blues Artists. Todd carries
his harps in a case given to him, for Christmas, by local Blues Legend Topper
Price.
A little over two and one-half years ago he picked up the guitar
for the first time. After years of singing and playing the harp, Todd watched a
Jimi Hendrix DVD and decided that he wanted to start playing the guitar. A few
days later, he played his first "guitar" gig with a blistering set which
included Hendrix's Voodoo Chile' and Purple Haze and Skynyrd's Freebird. Todd
not only played these difficult songs after only a few days of playing the
guitar, but he played behind his back, behind his head and with the guitar on
the floor! Todd's talents are not taught; they are a natural gift which is
evident when he plays. It is common for the band to play a request that Todd has
never played and the comfort and innate awareness of the guitar is apparent to
all.
Recently Todd has had the opportunity to open for some of his music
heroes –Huey Lewis and the News, Paul Thorn, The Marshall Tucker Band, The
Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Confederate Railroad, Sister Hazel and others.
Todd has also been given the great privilege of recording a Studio CD with the
legendary Music Producer Johnny Sandlin. Todd and the band have also played the
“Whiskey a GoGo” in LA while they were filming the movie “Lifted’ by Lexi
Alexander. The movie is a wonderful story set in the south and should be in
theaters in 2011 along with a pilot on singer, songwriters made by Bravo. Due to
his health problems, Todd was unable to do many things which healthy children
and teenagers were able to do. Although much was taken from Todd health-wise,
God's gift to Todd was his music. Todd realizes that his talents are a gift and
he is pursuing his dream to share his music with others.
It also makes one think that perhaps God is a Blues fan too!
